Anti-aging describes a wide variety of services and treatments designed to slow, prevent or even reverse the aging process. It can range from the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to aging to various cosmetic procedures that make the client look younger. Most anti-aging procedures can benefit both men and women, but there are some, like testosterone replacement therapy, that are just for men.
What is testosterone replacement therapy?
Testosterone is a hormone produced chiefly in the testes. It regulates many physical traits like musculature, bone density, body and facial hair and sperm production. The body’s production of testosterone peaks in adolescence and early adulthood, and it declines with age. Abnormally low testosterone production can be caused by disease as well as age, and the symptoms can resemble those of various diseases. The first step in treating a patient will be determining if they do have low testosterone, which often requires a blood test. Our doctor will then have to determine the cause of the low testosterone levels.
Symptoms of low testosterone can include the following:
• Erectile dysfunction
• Low sex drive
• Hair loss
• Decreased muscle mass
• Fatigue and lack of energy
Assuming the patient is healthy aside from their low testosterone level, our doctor will recommend some type of hormone replacement therapy. As some doctors fear that testosterone taken orally can damage the liver, most supplements will be injections or topical treatments. The latter can include gels, skin patches or mouth patches. There are also implants that can be placed beneath the skin and are slowly absorbed by the body.
The results of testosterone therapy vary greatly, with many men reporting greater energy, sexual performance and libido. Some men also see a marked increase in muscle mass, insulin sensitivity and bone density. Some men notice only modest improvements, while others note dramatic changes.
What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is a treatment that was approved by the FDA in 2015 to rid clients of double chins. Kybella® is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and absorbs fats. The treatment can destroy fat cells and is therefore often used as an alternative to surgery or liposuction.
Kybella® is administered through injection. The patient receives a series of injections per treatment session. Most patients need multiple sessions, each spaced about a month apart, to get the desired results. Those results can last for years.
